How to master your shot… the biggest lie!
Before you can shoot a natural and smooth shot, you have to have the mechanics locked into your muscle memory. Some players have trained with improper techniques and locked the wrong movements into their muscles.
My friend Paul Hoover is somewhat of a”rebel” in teaching players to shoot. I like Paul’s methods of teaching because he doesn’t glaze over on the specifics, and shows how the best shooters are also using the techniques he teaches. In my interview provided in The Jump Manual, Paul talks about everything from foot alignment, to finger placement so that your shot lines up smoothly and consistently.
In this video Paul clearly demonstrates how you should be “squaring up” and it is not how shooting is traditionally taught.
So what do you think?
What is helping you to shoot better?

well, what is helping me is doing swishes, i repeat SWISHES close to the basket. if i cant even do tat, then i can’t make it from far away. i would do 10 swishes in a row. then once u do it from the front of the basket, and then the sides, step back and keep going.
i also do 1 handed shots close to the basket if tat helps
I don’t remember any coach telling me to square up my feet (I grew up playing in the 1970’s) and I had some good coaches. All my coaches had me place my right foot ahead of my left (I’m right handed) to get the proper alignment. It’s natural to shift your torso to the direction of the basket as you shoot the ball. But the shot should still originate from the shoulder area (or higher depending on the defense), not in front of the face or directly above the head. Many players get this wrong. You don’t hold a gun or dart in front of your face before you shoot or throw.
If you want to know what your shot should look like take a look at Steve Nash. He is the best shooter in NBA history. He is the only player who has shot better than 40% from behind the 3 point line, 50% from inside the 3 point line and 90+% from the free throw line in each of three seasons. Even Larry Bird, one of my all time favorites, did it twice. Steve Nash is on course to do it again this year. I was wondering why you didn’t include him in the video?
I square my feet but bring arm to center of body when shooting, 85% ft.
