To jump your highest generally means you should be as close to your optimal weight as possible.
While everyone knows the value of eating healthy, the truth is the phrase “healthy eating” is quite vague and subjective. While we may all have an opinion on each other’s eating choices, is there a way to actually know if we are getting all the nutrients we need?
The U.S. government has come out with a baseline of each nutrient that is recommended daily. Please remember that this is not optimal, but rather the bottom line amount that you should be getting to avoid malnutrition.
Vitamin A | 5000 IU |
Vitamin C | 60 mg |
Vitamin D | 400 IU |
Vitamin E | 30 IU |
Vitamin K | 80 ?g |
Thiamin | 1.5 mg |
Riboflavin | 1.7 mg |
Niacin | 20 mg |
Vitamin B6 | 2 mg |
Folate | 400 ?g |
Vitamin B12 | 6 ?g |
Biotin | 300 ?g |
Pantothenic acid | 10 mg |
Calcium | 1000 mg |
Chloride | 3400 mg |
Chromium | 120 ?g |
Copper | 2 mg |
Iodine | 150 ?g |
Iron | 18 mg |
Magnesium | 400 mg |
Manganese | 2 mg |
Molybdenum | 75 ?g |
Phosphorus | 1000 mg |
Selenium | 70 ?g |
Zinc | 15 mg |
Unfortunately, studies have shown that it is nearly impossible to get all the recommended nutrients we need daily through diet alone, even if you believe your diet is “balanced.”
Now here’s where it gets interesting.
When it comes to weight loss, it may be impossible to achieve your target weight if your body is missing its key nutrients. And most formal diets like South Beach or Atkins for Life make it impossible to reach your needed amount of nutrients without going overboard on the calories. But there may be a solution…
In this study*, obese women were told not to change diet or to exercise but to simply take a vitamin a day (of the regular, no frills variety—Centrum). The results were shocking. On average, each woman:
- lost 3.4 kg (7.5 lb) of weight;
- decreased their BMI by 1.4;
- decreased their waist circumference by 2.4 cm (~1 inch); and
- dropped 2.8 kg (6.1 lb) of fat.
How could this be?
So bottom line is: take a multivitamin—not just because it’s impossible to get all your nutrients daily even if you are a “healthy eater” but because it will help you maintain a normal weight.
